and not feel some affection for the hip and guileless characters that populate its chaotic world. But beneath the warmth of Ondi Timoner's documentary--an insider's view of seven years in the company of Californian alt-rockers The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre--are archetypal themes of friendship and ambition that place
Dig!
near the top of the pantheon of great music documentaries. The film charts the intertwining careers of both bands as they lead a scene of psychedelic 60s revivalism, unpredictable gigs, casual recording sessions and a confrontational attitude towards the music industry. The Dandy's are straightforwardly ambitious: front-man Courtenay Taylor (the film's narrator) makes enough smart moves and radio-friendly songs to create commercial success. But The Brian Jonestown Massacre gradually implode--in a series of on-stage bust-ups, arrests and spats--under the leadership of maverick singer Anton Newcombe. The film's central character and Taylor's best friend, Newcombe is by turns a romantic, amusing and painfully transparent soul--a broken heart on the other side of a big attitude--and although his artistic temperament costs him the friends and recognition he craves, he might just be, at least in Taylor's eyes, the greatest musician of them all.
